Kamran Rastegar

Kamran Rastegar composes and performs music while based in Edinburgh, UK, where he teaches at the University of Edinburgh. His work may be described as contemporary transnational music with links to Arabic and Iranian musical traditions. Having received his BA degree in musicology in 1992, Kamran began composing and performing with avant-garde musicians and rock groups in New York and San Francisco in the early 1990s. In this work he also gained a wide range of experience with audio recording and music production. Kamran began scoring for films in the late 1990s, beginning with soundtracks for a number of short films including Annemarie Jacir’s like twenty impossibles, and feature films including Until When (dir. Dahna Abou Rahme), Hopefully for the Best (dir. Raed al-Helou) and Whose Children are These (dir. Theresa Thanjan) among others. His most recent soundtrack was for the feature film Salt of This Sea.

His soundtrack works have been compiled and released by the award-winning world music record label, Hermes Records. He has supplied tracks to compilation CDs such as Periferico, released by Sonic Arts, and Clouds, also released by Hermes Records.
